What's up with IZUP?
By Frederick Corrigan
Do you worry about your teenage children driving while texting or talking on their cell phones? Three years ago, there were an estimated 3,000 people killed in auto accidents in the United States while using their cell phones. Two years ago,an estimated 5,000 people lost their lives doing the same thing. Last year, an estimated 10,000 people died while driving and using cell phones. Do we really want to keep going down this road? Are we so high-tech that we're addicted to our cell phones? Well, guess what---High-tech got us into this problem and NOW, High-tech is going to get us out of it! But, first a story!! A New England mom was riding as a passenger in a car being driven by her 16 year old son. They were traveling on interstate I95 in Connecticut, which has a speed limit of 65MPH. Both of their cell phones rang at the same time. To her horror, as her son was struggling to answer his phone, the car was drifting into the next lane. Luck was with them, because they didn't cause an accident. However, mom knew at that moment, that something needed to be done about cell phones and driving. Today, her husband is the CEO of the company that produces the software for the app, IZUP. All major carriers have access to the new app, IZUP. IZUP shuts down your cell phone or blackberry when you are traveling over 5 MPH. No incoming or out going calls or text messages. When you stop, you will receive all messages that have come to your phone while you were in motion. Now as parents, you can get this app for all of your family's phones or blackberries. When children travel faster then 5mph on their bikes---no cell phone. The expected cost, for this app is around $2.95 per month. There are family plans available from some carriers at a discount. Now, let's look at adults. Do you have people who drive for your business? Delivery people, service people, sales people and company reps all carry personal cell phones. As their employer, you get the IZUP app installed into their cell phones. Now, no driving and texting or wasting time on personal phone calls. You may not be aware, but there is a $2,750.00 Federal Fine Nationwide for texting or talking on a cell phone while driving a commercial vehicle. 30 states now have some regulations concerning driving and texting. However, this is about to change. The producers of IZUP are on their way to Washington to meet with congress. The object: Federal mandates relative to IZUP on all cell phones while driving. By the way, when you get IZUP installed on your teen's cell phone, they can't un-install it. There is a 911 button that is active at all speeds, should there be an emergency.

Today's teen can be seen texting while crossing the street, crossing the parking lot, riding their bikes and various other life threatening activities. Text in motion can be deadly!!

What a brilliant idea, shame it can't be compulsory. But I guess if you are sitting in a passenger seat and not in control you might be a bit peeved if you can't use your phone.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
It will be compulsary in our lifetime, or else we'll be laying more of our children to rest! Inconvience doesn't stand up to death. Thanks for the visit and adding comments to the situation. Best wishes. Frederick
Great Frederick, Should be compulsory that the phone companies apply it no exceptions! Even hands free distract you, as can a passenger talking on their phone.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
We didn't have a phone in the car so why now? People are distracted by kids playing videos, gps ladies telling you where to go,ipods blaring loudly, and so it goes!! Thanks for your support, Adrian. Best to you. Frederick
Well spotted, Frederic. Texting while driving is madness.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Thanks for stopping by,Andrew. Your correct, texting is deadly madness. Best wishes. Frederick
Hi Frederick, What a brilliant idea! Wish we had the app in Spain. Driving whilst talking on the phone is one of the main causes of road accidents here. Even a "Hands Free" phone will still distract the driver. I know I might sound like a goody goody, but always turn of my mobile when I drive. Nothing is so important that it can't wait until I reach my destination. What did people do before mobile phones?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
We waited until we got home, then we listened to our messages and returned the calls. Today, stupid people can't wait until they can safely pull off the road to listen to their messages. Higher education still doesn't equate to greater common sence. Thanks for your support, Keith. I appreciate your comments. Best wishes. Frederick
Hello Frederick: Really sterling intel about a positive solution to a deadly problem. Good work. John

Thanks for your visit and your kind comments, John. Best wishes. Frederick
Wow! Sounds like a great edition. What if you (me) have a simple cell phone without apps? Does this work for that too?

I'm not sure about the app application, James, but I'll research it and get back to you. Thanks for your support. Best wishes. Frederick
I'd like to see a technology that would shut down the phone when inside a vehicle, regardless of speed. Yesterday at the shopping mall, a woman backed a gigantic vehicle (hummvee? I don't know the names of these things) into a parking space with one hand, while talking on a cell phone. Pedestrians and other drivers wisely gave her a wide birth since this operation put everyone at risk who was in the vicinity, and needless to say, she ended up taking two parking spaces.

You are absolutely correct, June. The parking lots are one of the most dangerous places for people driving while using their cell phones. Wouldn't you think that they could find a place to park, then talk!! Many times I've seen people climb into their cars in a mall lot, start talking on their cell phone and then start their car and drive away. Why not finish the call, before hitting the highway? Thanks for your support, June. Best to you. Frederick
Frederick, very interesting intel about amazing technology. Thanks for the safety tip. Jen

Thanks for the visit and the comments, Jen. Hopefully we'll be hearing more of this technology. Best wishes. Frederick
Hi Frederick, Great Intel. I gave it a 5 star rating. In Saskatchewan they now have a law against driving while using a cell phone...hands free is currently acceptable. Fine is $280, however, as I understand it the police are only supposed to issue warnings for now...don't understand why as the law was passed months ago. I was run off the road by a woman talking on her cell phone...when she saw that I was over the edge of the shoulder of the road, she glared at me as if I had caused her some grief. Luckily, I was only going 60 Km at the time and I was able to control my vehicle and get safely back on the road. Too bad they did away with the law that allowed police officers to seize vehicles involved in infractions of the law and impound them for two weeks. Maybe walking for that period of time would get the message across much more vividly. Gilbert

Thanks for your comments, Gilbert. I'd love to see vehicles impounded for infractions, but we can't seem to get people charged with 5th drunk driving charges off the road!! Weak Judges!! Lousey Defense Attorneys!! Individual rights are more important then majority safety!! Best wishes. Frederick
Good information to know, though I have a cheap cell phone. Only use it when I need it.

I appreciate the visit, Sandy. I too have a simple phone and refuse to answer it while driving. Best wishes. Frederick
Great intel, Frederick! I'm one of those people that uses a Bluetooth earpiece with no problems-- If anything because I get narcoleptic when I drive, it's probably helping to prevent accidents having me talk on it. LOL With that being said, I feel that texting while driving is sheer idiocy and if it means I have to give up being able to talk on my Bluetooth while driving then so be it. Kudos!

Thanks for your support and your comments, John. I think we'll all be looking to put safety ahead of our desires. We adults need to set a better example. Best to you. Frederick
Great 5 star intel and discussion. I suppose young people think they can text and drive at the same time but one is definitely taking a chance and it's really not a good choice. It could lead to a deadly one at that. I really am truly supportive of this wonderful solution you've shared, thanks!

Thank you for your visit and for your comments, Diana. We need to start pressing our congresspeople to get this done on a national level. Best wishes. Frederick
Good Intel Frederick. I didn't know such a device existed, but it sounds good. Tests have shown that using the phone while driving can be just as dangerous as driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. Both talking and listening on the phone demands an amount of concentration that takes away from concentrating on the road. And, as others have commented, hands free isn't completely safe by any means.

Thanks for stopping by and for your supporting comments, Geoff. Unfortunately, our state just enacted a law against texting, but not against hand held talking on cell phones. I suppose that half a loaf is better than nothing. Maybe with continued effort, we can get the other half!! Best wishes. Frederick
