We're related to these parks
By Frederick Corrigan
Almost every town and city in the United States has a park dedicated in memory of our veterans. Do we really stop and think who these veterans are? Somewhere in this great land of ours there is probably a relative of ours listed as a veteran of some conflict. Throughout America’s history, there have been conflicts to earn, maintain, secure or protect our freedoms. The greatest loss of life was in the Civil War (1861-1865) when the total casualties were 623,026. How many relatives did you lose then? Most of us don’t know unless we research our family history. The point of this story is not to make us search for family tragedy, but rather to get us to realize the importance of our veterans. The basic truth is that all of America is ‘Free’, because someone paid for that Freedom with his/her Life. When we go to a Veteran’s Park or watch a Memorial Day Parade, let’s make sure that our children understand the reason for the event. It is our respect for our heritage that helps to keep us ‘Free’. Maybe you are one of the lucky Americans who haven’t been directly affected by the loss of a relative in a war. Thank your lucky stars, for you can rest assured that your freedoms have come at a cost. Let’s respect those freedoms and not look at them as our rights, but rather the duty of each of us to respect. The total estimated number of Americans, who have died when answering “THE CALL”, around the world, is 1,314,000 from 1775 until 2009. This total continues to grow each day that we remain in Iraq and Afghanistan. Go to the Veteran’s Park, reflect on our Freedoms and Love our children. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
