She's Too Fat For Me
By Frederick Corrigan
I get dizzy I get numbo When I'm dancing With my Jum-Jum-Jumbo. Can she prance up a hill? No, No Can she dance a quadrille? No, No Does she fit in your coupe? By herself she's a group Could she possibly sit on your knee? No, No, No Do you remember these lyrics? Here's a couple more to refresh your memory. She's so charming and she's so winning But it's alarming when she's swimming She's a twosome She's a foursome If she'd lose some I would like her more some. I don't want her, you can have her, she's too fat for me. Recently, there have been tons of articles about OBESITY in the United States. Obesity is a major health problem and we need to talk about it. Obesity has far-reaching negitive implications for our children, their parents, their future and the economy. Researchers at Stanford University have found that more than 40% of the parents of obese children, will describe them as, "About The Right Weight". Would you believe, that another study showed that only 30% of pediatricians address overweight issues with their patients. Weight is a very sensitive topic and many Americans have little or no conception of portion control and healthy eating habits. Most overweight people are looking for the "Magic Pill", instead of healthy food and exercise. Only recently have we started eliminating saturated fats, soda, sodium, sugar and candy from our schools. This won't stop the abuse though, because some irresponsible parents will pack the goodies in the children's backpack. If the school were to take these goodies away from these children, the parents would sue. Maybe, we need to make our school properties junk food free, as we make them drug, gun and smoke free. Ths topic of being fat is off limits in our society. We talk about, "High BMI" (Body Mass Index), because we don't want to say, "Fat". Declaring the topic of being obese off limits, won't make it go away. Most babies aren't born obese. Most, become obese, because of irresponsible parenting. Look in the shopping baskets, at the grocery store, and see the amount of junk that the parents are bringing home to their families. Look at the size of the young people in our elementry schools, high schools and colleges. Fifth percent of these students will have 10, 15 and 20 fewer years of life, then if they had a proper diet and exercise. The health care cost for obese patients, far exceeds those of a person with the correct weight. Doctors don't talk to their patients about their weight, because it might hurt their feelings. Or, maybe the doctor would be sued, because he refused to treat them if they didn't follow his advise to lose weight. Well, Mom and Dad, maybe you think that you are going to die from something, so just enjoy what you eat. However, look your young daughter or son in the eye and say, "I don't care if you have 20 years less of life or have medical problems from being obese. We are what we eat. When we eat fat, we are fat. We don't eat obese! Now, back to the lyrics of the song. Many of you weren't born when that song was made famous. The actual title was, "Too Fat Polka", (Ross MacLean/Arthur Richardson). Recorded by: Arthur Godfrey-1947 The Andrew Sisters-1947 Frankie Yankovic & His Yanks-1968 Mighty Tubadours-1991 The song was also recorded by: Bobby Vinton, James Last Orch., Stan Wolowic & The Polka Chips, Whoopee John, Harry Zimmerman Big Band and Drew Carey. To see all of the lyrics, go to: http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/t/toofatpolka.shtml You might raise more then a few eyebrows, if you stand on the stage, in the school auditorium and sing this song. You can, as we did back then, change the "She" to "He" or "They", but the message is still the same. BMI is Fat. Plus size is Fat. Overweight is Fat. Plump is Fat. Enjoy life less with it or deal with it! It has been ignored too long! Maybe, we should sing and dance the, "Too Fat Polka", 30 minutes every day, in all of our schools and colleges. A little fun, can't hurt.

Trust me, I know that there are some people who have conditions that contribute to their overweight. This article is meant to make parents, LOVE their children, not stuff them.

Lots of folks would consider this a taboo subject, and they wouldn't want to hurt people's feelings, but this does not help the person who need help. I especially like the part about responsible parenting. My wife and I were very careful about the food we fed our five kids. They now range in age from 37 to 25. Not one is even remotely fat. In my own immediate relatives, we have some obese individuals and they struggle with it. It is quite hard to change. Much easier to start out with good habits. Good job, Frederick

Thank you for stopping by and for your comments, Edwin. I took a lot of liberties writing this intel, but society has been dancing far too long, around this subject. Best wishes. Frederick
Obesity is not about what you eat, it is about how you treat your body. At the end of the last war the food that was eaten in the UK was, quite literally, loaded with everything that today's experts tell us will kill us. We ate food fried in dripping rendered from the fat or, if our parents could not afford the meat, our food was fried in lard. Fried bread with salt was a real treat. Suet was grated to make suet puddings, dumplings and other filling items. Much of the food we ate was well past its sell by date - the severe rationing ensured that absolutely nothing remotely edible was wasted. Despite the food we ate, we did not get fat. Children seldom ate to the degree of over indulgence that they do today, nor did they spend so much time sedenterilly communicating with our toys - we were out of the house and playing physical games and exploring bombed sites. Very few people used cars or busses to get around - they walked everywhere. It is not the food that is killing us, it is our own abuse of our owbn body's by neglecting the need to exercise to burn off the calories that we do eat but don't need.

Your comments are so true and I appreciate them, Arthur. I remember one summer when I was about 10, we had fried salt pork and boiled potatoes for lunch almost every day. We couldn't afford meat, we didn't have a refrigerator and salt pork was cheap. The key to our being skinny, was portions and keeping active. Best wishes. Frederick
I wonder if you would get locked up for singing that song today? It was very popular when I was a boy - and it was an old song then!

Maybe, that's part of our problem. We may need to inject a little fun into the serious situation, instead of shooting the messenger. Best to you, Arthur. Frederick
What a nice song! "Too Big-Boned Polka" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

If you search the title, you will find sites that have videos of the music and lyrics, Nick. We all can use a little movement in our daily lives, it's healthy! Best Wishes. Frederick
Great work on the article. Enjoyed it. Although I am not from the United States, the same attitudes and life styles are percolating down to other countries

Thank you for stopping by and I'm glad that you enjoyed the intel, Rudy. Maybe, I should start franchising, "Too Fat Polka Exercise Studios". We used to go dancing at least once a week as teenagers. Best wishes. Frederick
Thank you Frederick, an insightful intel telling it like it is not messing around being PC FAT IS FAT! If you are obese then you are FAT. Perhaps you find this word offensive, if you do then have a look in the mirror and see why. At the top of the page when I clicked the link to this intel there was an ad for all you could eat in London with up to a 70% Discount and the picture of all you could eat CAKES! Is it time to ban this kind of advertising as we have banned cigarettes and alcohol ads. FAT is generally a self inflicted disease and will kill you long before you need to die!

Thank you for visiting and for your constructive comments, Adrian. I agree that food adds need to have more controls as they are very misleading, especially for our children. Parents are still the greatest influence and need to leave the bad food in the store! Best wishes. Frederick
I remember the song well, I'm fat, and have been fighting it for years, then when I retired I gave up and so now I'm really fat. I have tried a lot of things, and when I read the book "How to Eliminate Self Defeating Behaviors" I did the exercises, and learned that I decided to be fat at 10 and remembered the decision and remembered how hard I worked to get fat, but I was only 15# overweight as a teenager, but still was teased a lot, and my brother sang that some to me. It didn't help, and it won't help anyone now. I kept my weight down when I worked, but I don't know what happened when I retired, except I guess I ate too much, and now it is harder to lose as I have been trying and lose the same 10 pounds over and over. I was taught to eat right, so there is no excuse. It isn't only our children that need to be thin. The elderly do also to have energy for what they want to do. I exercise a lot even now.

Thank you for being so forthright and honest, Marlene. You are a brave lady and I applaud your efforts to combat the trials life has given you. Your support is very much appreciated and hopefully, others will get benefit from this intel. Best to you. Frederick
Hi Frederick: Terrific, insightful intel. Had Sinatra recorded "The Fat Polka," many of the bobbysoxers may have paid more attention to staying slim. No doubt about the merits of exercise in the equation, but exercising more self-control would also go a long way in the fight to expunge both "obese" and "fat" from our lives and vocabulary.

Thank you for visiting and for your comments, John. To help our young people and in turn help the future generations, the parents of today need to exercise more self-control in the grocery store. Best wishes. Frederick
Frederick, did you know that here in the UK they have started reinforcing ambulances to strengthen them due to the higher average weight of people? They are also widening the beds that patients lie on because people are getting "bigger" ie wider. I feel sorry for paramedics and other ambulance staff who have the job of carrying patients who are oversized down stairs and into the ambulance.

We are seeing this widening of seats and beds as a constant discussion, Geoff. Some people have to pay for two seats on the airplane. The sad part, is when the 10 year old child can't fit in the seat in school, or can't play games, because their parents didn't pay attention!! Best wishes. Frederck
I raised my babies on homemade natural food and rarely had junk food or pre-packaged food in the house. Almost everything was made from scratch. Unfortunately, both girls are adults and somewhat overweight, much to my consternation. When they're so busy, quick food is easier, but they're trying by packing their own lunches, eating healthier and exercising more.

Thank you for visiting and for your comments, Marty. As a parent, you did the right things and as our children grow up, it's their responsibility to follow the right examples. Too many people have poor time management skills and are always too busy. We are creatures of habit and convience is many times, the results of our habits. Best to you. Frederick
I do remember this song. I tried to play the accordian once. The right hand was easy for me but I had to learn the l.h. buttons and of course the pulling and pushing action of the instrument. Good reminders you've shared in a refreshing way with this song... to use it or lose it. Thanks Frederick.
Re. your comment, "Trust me, I know that there are some people who have conditions that contribute to their overweight." I appreciate you acknowledging this. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was in my early 40's. I have no thyroid at all and am living only because of a very astute specialist. I can control my weight if I am "very" careful what I eat and get regular exercise. When I am surrounded by "fat" food I very often take myself away from the scene or get busy doing something so I am not tempted. I find there are many things that can bring me so much more pleasure than eating junk. I stay active and interested in many things and keep from getting fat. So there is a life after thyroid problems.
