"_ _ _ k is Luck"
By Frederick Corrign
When I was a young boy, I was told that if you found a horseshoe and nailed it over the door you would have good luck. Now, you had to nail the horseshoe with the opening facing up or your luck would fall out. Well, horseshoe isn’t spelled “_ _ _ k” so that can’t be luck. I can remember crawling around the lawn with my siblings looking for a four leaf clover. The story goes that anyone who finds a four leaf clover will have good luck. I think someone wanted to keep us kids busy, because four leaf clover isn’t spelled “_ _ _ k”, so it can’t be luck. Did you ever hear, ”Don’t step on a crack or you’ll break your mothers back”? Well step on a crack isn’t spelled “_ _ _ k, so it won’t bring bad luck, for you or your mother. When you watch a professional baseball game, you will notice that the players don’t step on the foul line as they enter or leave the baseball diamond. Guess what, foul line isn’t spelled “_ _ _ k, so that can’t help their luck. I can remember my grandmother grabbing her rosary and saying 10 Hail Mary’s, if a bird flew up against the house window and dropped dead onto the ground. Supposedly this meant that someone in the family was going to die. You get the picture, bird hitting the window is too long to fit,”_ _ _ k, so once again that isn’t luck. Did you ever walk down the street and see a ladder leaning up against a building? People walked around the ladder and not under it, because that would bring bad luck. Well, ladder doesn’t fit,”_ _ _ k, so that isn’t either good or bad luck. You walk down the sidewalk and you spot a penny lying there. If you pick up the penny and heads is up, you will have good luck. If tails are up, you will have bad luck. I know that penny doesn’t fit, “_ _ _k, so I’ll bet that this isn’t luck. You are getting dressed for work and in your haste you pull your sweater over your head and insert your arms, “OOPS” the sweater is inside out. If you take it off, you will have bad luck all day. You look funny and here we go again. Sweater doesn’t fit,”_ _ _ k, so it can’t be luck. You’re 14 and you really want a horse that you can ride and win showmanship awards. Maybe even become state champion. You go to the big horse sale with your parents and your grandfather, who used to own racehorses. Finally, after 2 hours, you see a beautiful black mare with a white blaze down her nose and four white socks. She’s perfect and you convince dad to make a bid. He’s about ready to raise his bid card, and you hear grampa say, “A horse with four white socks and a blaze, will never get you anyplace”. Dad pulls down the bid card and you don’t get the horse of your dreams. Don’t feel bad, grandpa didn’t realize that four white socks and a blaze don’t fit, “_ _ _ k”, so it has nothing to do with luck or winning. The groom can’t see his bride in her wedding dress, until the moment she starts down the aisle on her wedding day. If he sees her before, they will have bad luck. The last time I looked, forty-four percent of marriages in America end in divorce. That figures, wedding dress doesn’t fit, “_ _ _k”, so it obviously isn’t luck. Did you figure it out yet? If it’s not the horseshoe, the four leaf clover, the sidewalk crack, the foul line, the bird hitting the window, the ladder, the penny, the sweater, the horse with socks or the bride’s dress, what is luck? Many years ago, I was attending a motivational conference. The professor asked the audience to define luck in one four letter word. There were many answers given and then the professor wrote on the blackboard, ‘Luck is spelled “W O R K” ’. If you want good luck, then you have to WORK at it and for it. The work can be physical or mental, but it has to be channeled with the proper objectives to bring good luck. Do those things that make you happy and in such a way as to make others happy. Good luck my friends. WORK on!

I like the way you think but 'luck' is not spelled 'w o r k' - that spells success. My whole life has been lived in the sphere of serendipity. No matter how bad my luck ever was (and I mean BAD) there has not been a single occasion when here was not a benefit that subsequently became apparent. Even my early cancer, which plagues me to this day, has probably given me my long life (over forty years ago I was given six hours to live) because it removed some of the possibilities of developing an even more viscious cancer. There are two types of luck, good and bad, I assure you that bad luck is never aspired to by anybody. The repost - the harder I practice, the luckier I become - was meant to be a put-down to an incredibly stupid comment by a spectator who was riddled with jealousy and was unable to appreciate that 'effort in' equals 'results out' but even the most successful of people sometimes also benefit from 'luck' or serendipity.

One of the advantages of living a number of decades, is being able to share the wisdom we have gained through that living. Thank you for you comments. Frederick
I agree, nothing beats hard work, not even the luck of the Irish. Though the way you survived a propane gas fireball does seem to confirm that the Irish are more lucky than most.

Absolutely. I've seen chance fall my way a few times, but work is what has gotten me through pretty much every time

You are oh so right. It's liek fishing, my latest sport. You might catch a fish with an emty hook, but you have to experiment with different baits or hooks or line strengths. It takes a lot of seasons to start getting good catches, you can try asking other anglers what to do, but are they really going to tell your secrets? You have to find out for yourself and continue to apply the knowledge gained. I like your article a lot, it reflects many of the experiences of my own life. Thanks for sharing.
This made me smile...thank you!
