Bear Befriends Tiger In The Snow

By Frederick Corrigan

We're getting additional snow about every three days. Winter isn't about to quit anytime soon and the snowbanks are making travel very difficult and dangerous. When you drive down the road, you have difficulty seeing the homes on that road. People driving out of their driveways, have to enter the highway very slowly, as the on-coming traffic can't see them, due to the high snowbanks.

The senior population is getting snowbound, as walking and driving are both very hazzardous.

The snow is accumulating on the roofs of the buildings and now there is a serious danger of roofs falling into the buildings. There have been 2 three-season rooms and one carport fall from the snowload in our community this past week. Across the state of Massachusetts, there have been over one hundred roofs, including two schools, that have fallen under the weight of the heavy snow.

Okay, the doldrums have taken over again and I heard, (or thought I heard), that the "Tiger in the snow" was looking for a friend.

Once again, I know that I will have to manufacture the snow, so that I can sculpture the bear.

WHAT, with all of this snow and I have to manufacture more!! Well, the truth is, I have to add water to the snow so that I can get the consistency needed to form a frozen snow sculpture.

The process will be the same process that I used on "Tiger In The Snow". Once again, I'll need my garbage can, pail, waste basket, trowel, chisel, snow shovel and rubber mallot.

The snow will be mixed with water in the garbage can and allowed to freeze or set-up. The temperature is in the teens and low 20's, so freezing isn't a problem. The solid mixture will then be stacked, side by side and on top of each other, until I have sufficient frozen snow stacked in place.

Now, I can start carving my bear sculpture.

Wait a minute!! Isn't a bear a strange friend for a tiger? Normally, the two never see each other in real life. However, if you recall, I wanted to sculpture figures that would turn the heads of those passing by.

On with the carving and I'll start at the top with the head and shoulders. The bear is standing on two feet, as this will definitely attract attention.

I continue carving the features of my bear and finally, on the second day, my bear is complete.

Now, as with the "Tiger", I'll paint the bear sculpture with a mixture of food coloring and water. This bear is special and requires special colors. I've decided to color the bear yellow and black with white as a background color.
Well, normally, there are black bears, brown bears and white bears, if it's a polar bear.

The reason the bear befriended the tiger, is that this is a special New England Bear!

You won't find him in the woods, or at the zoo or in the cave. He hybernates in the spring and comes out every fall. He wanders from New England to Canada, to Washington,D.C. and points south.

This roaming continues until spring, then he hybernates again, until fall. His yellow, black and white coloring makes him recognized as a dangerous enemy everywhere he wanders, outside of his native New England. He has strange habits and generally is most active after 7PM in the evening, and with the other members of his breed, engages in battle with other breeds.

These bears are very special to a tremendous number of people in the New England area, particularly in the Boston, Massachusetts area. When you check the attached images, you will find that the "Tiger" has been befriended by a "Boston Bruin".

At this time, the Bruins are leading the Northeast Division of the National Hockey League, by only 2 points over the Montreal Canadians.

Maybe by joining the "Tiger", the "Bruins" can bring home a Title and a Stanley Cup!!

Now, you can check the images and visualize the pleasure that all of my senior citizen neighbors felt, having a Boston Bruin in the neighborhood.

Contributor's Note

According to Websters Ninth New Collegiate Dictonary, "Bruin" is a "Bear". Also, the name of the bear in, "Reynard the Fox".
This sculpture was pictured in The Boston Herald, Friday, Feb. 4, 2011.

Thanks for stopping by, Nick.
Glad you liked my little play on words.
To be honest, being born in this cold climate and wearing layers of clothing makes working outside bearable. Ops, there I go again, playing with words.
Best wishes.

Lol, love your method of story-telling, Frederick. What a way to get rid of the..., how did you put it.., doldrums. You sculptures are great. The bear is very beary, ;) and the tiger is chillin'. I imagine that they catch the eyes of a good many passer-by's.

Thank you for visiting and for your comments, Wynn.
It has been a fun winter for me and the senior citizens have really enjoyed it. Not much happens in this community, so seeing my sculptures in the newspapers and on TV has led to a lot of discussions.
Best wishes.

I tried to hide the identity as long as possible to add a little interest to the piece.
Playing in the snow has been fun.
Best to you.

I glad that you liked the story as I had a great time playing boy in the snow.

I can't imagine what it would be like have the problems of snow caving in roofs, nor how it would feel to do an ice sculpture of this magnitude. However, my creative streak wants to jump out and have a go. I cannot recall 'snow' even though I was born in a European country before coming to Australia at a very young age, snow in South Australia just doesn't happen.

I love the changes in the four seasons here in New England.
However, life would be easier in a warmer climate.
Creating can be very rewarding, especially when it's done just from imagining.
I hope that you are safe from all of the weather problems that have been on the world news about Australia.
Best wishes.

Hah! What a great way to dance with Mother Nature - make fun. Great work, Frederick!

Mother Nature is there for us to play and dance,we just need to show a little respect for her beauty.
Best to you.

I reviewed your intel in the wee hours of this morning .. I knew it was written by you as soon as I read the title. I'm wondering what you will think up next. If it is anything too serious I don't think that I could "bear" it.
All the best during this cold season. (here too)

It was great fun, Diana. The seniors in our community have really enjoyed the sculptures, almost as much as I enjoyed making them. Many of them brought their children and grandchildren to see the snow sculptures.
Thank you for your kind comments.
Best wishes.

Well done on the sculptures and this Intel Frederick. Wonderful to see you enjoying yourself in the snow. We had plenty of the stuff in December but I must say creating something out of the white fluff was the last thing on my mind.
