Article Writing----Are You Kidding?

By Frederick Corrigan

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME! That was a great movie and it turned many dreams into apparent reality.

Are we in the movies? Well, we might think that we are as we produce these websites, hoping that people will come.
Many website owners are really just hoping and wishing.

Take a look at some of the facts. I’ve seen websites with an alexa ranking over 22,000,000. That’s 22 million websites that have some form of traffic or (lack thereof). There are still more out there in cyber space, stirring up the internet airwaves and really just ‘taking up space’.

How many people have ‘free’ websites, built by whomever and they think; now I’m in the E-commerce world? There is nothing wrong with ‘free’ if it gets the job done. However, there is a saying, ‘If they sell for less, they must know the value’.

Building the website is only the start of the process. Let’s relate to the movie again. If the producers of the film didn’t advertise it, who would even know the movie existed?

Remember, you had a dream, you wanted to sell ‘widgets’, so you built, or had a website built. You are now ‘one’ of over ’22 million’. You’re large, you’re a star and you’re on your way to E-commerce stardom.

The website is beautiful, has all the right colors, the background is right for selling ‘widgets’ and you’re as happy as a pig in mud. Well, the analogy is right, you’re lying around the the internet mud.

Guess what? Three months later and you haven’t sold a single ‘widget’. Do you have control of your website’s back office or can’t you even tell how many people have come to look at your ‘widgets’?

Now you start to see the small part of the big picture. You MUST market and advertise. If you don’t tell people, how will they know that you have ‘widgets’ to sell. In fact, if you write ‘Everything is Free’ on your home page, you couldn’t give away your ‘widgets’ because you’re lost in the 22 million plus pieces of mud.

Okay, where are we going? We have spent time and money to build our ‘widget’ website. What do we do next? We advertise, advertise, advertise and advertise. That sounds good, but how do we advertise in space?

AH HA, now we’re getting somewhere. Someone told you that article writing was a great way to get ‘backlinks’ to your site and with more ‘backlinks’ you will have better search engine rankings. This in turn could move your website up on the search engine page listings. Guess What? Now people looking for ‘widgets’ can find you.

So you sign up with a company that publishes articles. You read their FAQ’s, their manuals, their privacy policies, their procedures, and their How To's.

Now for starters let's say that this article publisher has a 5 page rank website. You couldn’t get a 5 page rank site to link to you unless it belonged to your mother. OK, maybe your friend. But seriously, every article that you write will get your website a backlink from a 5 page rank website.

Write 25 articles and get 25,5 page rank backlinks. So, now write 50, 75 or 100 articles or more. You don’t have time? What’s the rush? You only want to improve your search engine listings for the website that is YOUR DREAM.

We won’t mention that maybe, as you learn to write desirable articles, you might make money writing articles for other websites. That’s just a little GRAIN to help the NAPPING PIG get out of the mud.

The people you meet are adults, professional people and just plain helpful. These people will only make you a better person and webmaster.

MAKE THAT DREAM BECOME TRUTH!

So true, Frederick. The best ecommerce site out there isn't worth a nickel unless you get plenty of targeted traffic. Article writing is one way to get this traffic. You can also buy PLR articles and rewrite them so the content is original. I do that from time to time.

I thank you for your comments, June.
I've never used PLR articles, but I'll check them out.
Your support is appreciated.

It still amazes me how someone's thought process will condone trying to convince anyone to hand over money to someone doing so poorly they can't afford a dollar a month to pay for hosting???

We're from a generation that realizes the value of hard work, Warren.
Today, it's what can I get for free. These sites don't last.
Thanks for your comments.

Warren, that's because its so easy to get filthy rich on the Internet. The money just rolls in while you loll on the beach drinking things with umbrellas in them. I'm thinking back a couple of years when friend wanted me to make her rich by doing a little Internet marketing for her. I told her what she wanted wasn't possible, and she replied that she would research it herself and show me how to do it. I'm still waiting. LOL

Excellent overview for the budding web entrepreneur. Thousands of people are in the position you describe. Sadly many try to get themselves out of the mud by investing in one silver bullet after another. It takes elbow grease, good management skills, and the right tools. Article sites are definitely a useful tool.

Hi Frederick, when you submit these articles to sites they are offered to others to put on their own site with another link back to you. It works because that's what I do and I have the same articles sometimes 1, 2 or 3 times republished. That is 10 articles = 20-40 or more back links mostly only PR 0 sites but they are most often growing as well so the PR rankings on them can also rise.

That's good practice.

A dammed good reminder, thanks again Frederick .

Very nice article and I love the analogies. I am right now a pig in mud, been struggling like these for a while, but hopefully more article writing and backlinks will help me find my way to clean waters in 2010.

It's not always easy to determine if an article will give you traffic to your site. Even though you might write on a popular site, there is no guarantee that your article will get the traffic that you desire, however good articles on popular topics usually do achieve success.

Wishing you success in 2010, and me too with the new ideas that I have been working on lately.

Over a year ago, I created a blog and also began writing some lenses (web pages) for Squidoo. I know I write well and often use my own photographs to illustrate, but I didn't understand about promotion and how to get people to find me. I've been educating myself by reading excellent articles online. I'm going to redo my blog and continue to write for Squidoo. I've joined Redgage, Qondio, Twitter and Facebook, and understand pinging. Article writing is next.

This is my first go-round with article writing and I'm enjoying it.
Frederick

You hit the nail on the head Frederick. This is not my "niche" blog, but I enjoy writing here.

One piece of advice I received was that when you write, give value, and don't do it just to make money or just to create backlinks. People will remember you for what you do and say. Your reputation for giving value will automatically lead to some kind of positive reciprocity be it sales or whatever in the long run.

Just don't be in a hurry. It takes some time for a small slow-moving snowball to become a huge unstoppable giant avalanche.

Quality quality quality. Value value value. Of course it's in the eye of the beholder, but that's what you have to strive for, and Frederick, you have quality and consistently give value. I't a pleasure to read your stuff.

Hi Frederick. In today's Internet world, you grab a Private Label Rights Article, feed it into an Article jumbler for want of a better description, and out pops a new reauthored article for distrubution to all and sundry. They also include an automatic submitter to all of the established article sites. I have ownership of thousands of these articles on EVERY subject imaginable, but I tend to sit down and write my own AFTER I have read the article I have. I like to be an individual and also someone who doesn't pretend to be who I'm not. How can people state they are an 'expert' on a subject, when they actually don't have a clue? I steer clear of these people and becoming one OF them. Great intel, as usual.

Tis is a very thought provoking piece Frederick. Most people give up when they 'hit the wall'. If we just take article marketing as an example and you tell someone you want to be successful on the internet with writing 5,000 QUALITY articles. They will 'hit a wall', maybe after writing 5, 50, or 500 articles. They hit that wall and say 'it's just all to hard'. Success doesn't know what a wall is

My story runs along the same lines, with my trying to promote my floundering web sites several years ago, and joining Squidoo with the idea of writing about them.

I soon found that on Squidoo I could write about much more, and at the same time I could also earn money from writing. So, I not only promoted my web sites, I wrote about a lot more things, then got into Adsense, retrofitted this into my websites, and did a lot of re-hashing of things.

Several years down the road, I haven't found Squidoo to be the site of my dreams, but have discovered a number of others. I not have several blogs of my own, that promote my original sites, Squidoo lenses, and other things too. I also write on sites like Qondio and Associated Content, and have many interlinks between my interests. Not to mention trying to sell products that I have designed on places like Zazzle and Redbubble.

The Field Of Dreams (Build It And They Will Come) analogy is very good, but if along the way you find that the advertising for your field leads to other fields, promote them as well, and create yourself a whole farm of dreams.

Very interesting Frederick and it works both ways. Since the original writing of this Intel Qondio has gone from a PR5 to a PR6 website. I am sure my mother doesn't own it.

I am past the 100 Intel mark and heading for 200 Intels.

After growing up on a farm I have seen pigs in mud and it isn't a pretty site but they love it.

I commented here in mid January that I was like a pig in mud, struggling to find ways to promote my web sites.

A week after commenting, I joined and began to write for Associated Content, and now after 5 months and 270 articles published, I am getting somewhere and improving my earnings nicely.

I have found though that writing on Associated Content has become my main focus, and my website/blog has for now become a place to promote my other works, rather than the other way around.

My lens development at Squidoo has also been tailored towards promoting Associated Content and my other articles, although a number of topics in common do have links in both directions.

In the last few weeks there has been another development, the opening of Fortitude, another site where you can get paid for writing, and this for me is looking very good right now.

I think in reality, where you write depends on the nature of what you are writing, the audience that you are marketing to, and the potential earnings.

Poddys Jun 16, 2010 13:32

Thank you for the interesting information on Associated Content, Tony. I'll be looking into developing these avenues when I get back into full swing in about a month.

@biblefreeorg Wow I just saw that you had 200 pieces of Intel, great job. I like the way that Qondio is growing. I just need to find more time to write everywhere.

Qondio is great for article marketing, they're really starting to show in the SERPS more often. However, the one thing I wish they'd work on is the "yellow" status on my McAfee Site Advisor. It must have been back from the days of spammers from Qassia.

Interestingly, I just read an article about how the pagerank value of the page your link is on is not the only thing that matters. Since Qondio is a PR 5 or 6 right now, it matters what the home page PageRank is, in addition to the PR of the page the link can be found. For example, Squidoo's PR is 8, and while your lens may have only a PR of 1, the PR of 8 somehow factors into the equation.

Great intel!
